Group D had the privilege of closing in the early session. Costa Rica already shocked the world by winning back to back games against Uruguay and Italy. They knew they were through to the round of 16, and England were already planning their trip home. This game ended a scoreless draw, and each team claimed a point. This was no consolation prize.

Meanwhile, Uruguay and Italy were battling with all to play for. All the Italians needed was a draw to advance out of the group. Unfortunately, they never really got into the game. For Uruguay's part they didn't do much to grab control of the game. Italy's Claudio Marchisio received a red car in the 59th minute. Luis Suarez was biting people again, but the officials didn't see it, so it's like it didn't happen. Finally in the 81st minute, Diego Godin headed the ball past Gigi Buffon and gave Uruguay the victory. As a result, Costa Rica win the group with 7 points, and Uruguay finish runners up with 6 points.
