British Sterling Worth More than Elevan Croatians

7/51 through the tournament as day 3 began with England playing host to Croatia. England host all their group games, can qualify to host a round of 16 game, will play at home if they reach the semi-finals, and host the championship match. That being said they continued a trend in this tournament. First half goals are rare and English nerves kept it as such. Croatia kept believing they could come out the victors coming off of their 2nd place finish at 2018’s World Cup. Their fortune would change as Raheem Sterling would score off of Kalvin Phillips’s through ball in the 57th minute. England struggle to hold onto a 1-0 lead at tournaments, and have never won their opening match at a European Championship. Today’s performance puts those negative trends behind them. England move to the top of the group whil Croatia fall to fourth. Historicus selected England for his Euro Buddy. Phil Foden’s yellow card brought his Buddy Points total down to 8.

Aus'Tryin' to Score and it Happened Three Times

The second match of the day pitted Austria against European Championship debutantes North Macedonia. Both teams missed the memo that you’re supposed to wait to score for the second half. Austria would open up the scoring in the 18th minute when Stefan Lainer scored off of Marcel Sabitzer’s assist. North Macedonia would need 10 minutes to even the match when Goran Pandev gave his country their first goal at a major tournament assisted b Aleksandar Trajkovski. Austria were out to avoid the unnecessary draw in the opening match. In the 78th minute David Alaba’s cross would find the center of the box where Michael Gregoritsch would put the ball past the keeper narrowly missing Stole Dimitrievski’s head with his foot in the process. The match would be capped off by Marko Arnautovic’s goal from the Konrad Laimer Assist. The victory puts Austria first in the group as North Macedonia slide into the bottom spot.

Dutch Order of Victory with a Side of Dumfries

The final match of the day saw Netherlands and Ukraine put on a fierce back and forth show. The Dutch would open the scoring in the 52nd minute when Georginio Wijnaldum would score with a shot to the left corner of goal. Netherlands would feel in control when just six minutes later Wout Weghorst scored with a shot to the right corner of goal. Ukraine would wake up and put up quite the fight. In the 75th minute Andriy Yarmolenko would score off of the Roman Yaremchuk assist. Just four minutes later Roman Yaremchuk would score his own goal with a header from Ruslan Malinovskiy’s cross. From here it was anyone’s game until Denzel Dumfries would score with a header of his own from Nathan Ake’s cross in the 85th minute. Ukraine would run out of time and find themselves sitting third in the group while Netherlands would rise into second. Scriptor selected Netherlands as his Euro Buddy, and they netted him 57 points. IoannesNix selected Ukraine as her Euro Buddy and gained 32 points.

Today’s player of the day finds himself in first place. Euro Buddy points were obviously a help, but 17 points on the day was a brilliant performance on its own merit. Congratulations to Scriptor. Three players wait for their Euro Buddies to help them out, and the next few days will provide them that assistance.

Sleep well my Crias,
