And the Winner Is....!

The Third Place playoff match ended in 0 points for all our contestants. No one picked the United Arab Emirates to win or predicted the correct score.

As for the final, everyone but Praeceptor picked Australia to win. That was good for 5 points for those that did, but again, no one predicted the score.

Day 19's Bonus Bonanza asked what gift Scriptor received on his 30th birthday. Praeceptor guessed correctly earning 5 points. For being the one to give the gift to Scriptor, she also earned another 5 points.

Day 20's Bonus Bonanza was answered only by Artifex. So she gains the 3 points.

Day 21's Bonus Bonanza saw 4 points to Artifex for her boisterous answer. The other 1 point went to IoannexNix because her choice for Wrestler name and Wrestling finisher name were better.

Day 22's Bonus Bonanza saw 5 points go to Praeceptor. "I'm Too Sexy" is a song you would sing to serenade yourself, not someone else. "I'm A Thug" is sort of Scriptor's theme song, and surely the way to get his attention.

Obviously, Scriptor was awarded a point for his birthday.

Sadly, not a one of you took a gander at the 20 Bonus Bonanza points the final day provided. There were enough points there for anyone to win the tournament.

FINAL STANDINGS:

FIFTH PLACE: 26 POINTS  6 BONUS POINTS

FOURTH PLACE: 28 POINTS  20 BONUS POINTS

THIRD PLACE: 34 POINTS  10 BONUS POINTS

SECOND PLACE: 38 POINTS  16 BONUS POINTS

ASIAN CUP CHAMPION:  39 POINTS  9 BONUS POINTS

An exciting debut for Quaesitor. You played valiantly.

Coming Home when You're Already Home. Or Can a Sequel be Better than the First Film?

The dream run for the United Arab Emirates ended today, as we were all caught in the depths of a blizzard. After wins over Qatar and Bahrain, the Emirates bounced back from a loss to Iran by defeating the defending champions Japan 5 to 4 on penalty kicks. This set up a semifinal contest with the hosts Australia. Australia's run started out great with big wins over Kuwait and Oman before losing to South Korea 1:0. Though the pundits may have said that Australia's time in the tournament was over, they coolly put out a Chinese team that seemed to be on an upward ascent. Today say the Socceroos need only 14 minutes to put this game away. The winning goal came just 3 minutes into the game by way of central defender Trent Sainsbury. Just 11 minutes later, left back Jason Davidson would put the game away. United Arab Emirates will now face off against Iraq for third place on Friday. Australia will get another chance at the only team to beat them in this cup as they face South Korea on Saturday.

IoannesNix: Korea Republic 1:2 Japan    Australia
Artifex: DPR Korea 3:1 Japan    Australia
Quaesitor: Kuwait 0:2 Qatar   Australia
Praeceptor: DPR Korea 3:2 Jordan

Praeceptor finds herself  without a team left in the tournament. She can only gain points from correct scorelines or bonus bonanza points.

The rest of the field have correctly picked Australia to be in the final, and as a result pick up 3 points.

For correctly answering yesterday's Bonus Bonanza, Artifex gains 2 points.

The Only Korea, or Shopping Off the Discount Iraq

In 2011, South Korea battled all the way into the semfinals where they were defeated by Japan in a penalty kick shootout. They picked themselves up, and defeated Uzbekistan to finish fourth. 2015 is already an improvement. Lee Jeong-hyeop's 20th minute strike would be enough to win the game. That didn't prevent Kim Young-gwon from scoring in the 50th minute just to seal the deal. As a result, South Korea await tomorrow's winner between Australia and the United Arab Emirates in the Championship match. Though they lost, Iraq have improved this tournament, as well. 2011 saw them lose in the quarterfinals 1:0 to Australia after going into extra time. Though they lost today, they still have a chance to leave the tournament on a winning note. They, too, await the result of the Australia and United Arab Emirates match as the loser will join Iraq in the third place matchup on Friday.

Korea Republic 2:0 Iraq

Scriptor: Australia 3:0 Iraq
IoannesNix: Australia 3:1 Iraq
Artifex: Australia 2:0 Qatar
Quaesitor: Australia 2:1 Palestine
Praeceptor: Australia 1:2 Iraq

The Day 15 Bonus has not been awarded. There has been no correct answer. That question is not open ended, but does indeed have a factual answer.

Day 16's Bonus fell to Artifex for showing love to the couches. Those couches don't get enough love.

Also, Artifex gained a point today for picking that the first semifinal would finish 2:0 to the home side.

Please note, all yellow cards have been wiped off the books. From here on forward, players start with a clean slate.

Got the Whole Club Shakiring or Fly Emirates

The second day of Quarterfinal Action began with a border war as Iran, the top ranking team in Asia, battled Iraq, the scrappy underdog in this matchup. Sardar Azmoun's 24th minute goal put Iran up first, and the stadium exploded with cheers. The intensity would heat up when Iraqi keeper Jalal Hassan would scoop up the ball. Iran's leftback Mehrdad Pooladi would stick his foot in to try and knock the ball away. Jalal was having none of it, and got up shoving Pooladi lightly. Mehrdad fell to the ground clutching his face, but the referee was front and center to the action. He showed Mehrdad a yellow card, which was troubling because he already had one. This meant that Iran were now done to 10 men. Let's jump to the second half where Ahmed Yasin would strike for Iraq tying the game in the 56th minute. But the man advantage would do little to help Iraq score again in regulation, and it also tired out their Iranian counterparts who had to make up for the missing man. The deadlock would break in the 93rd minute when Younus Mahmood would head home a shot deflected by Iran's keeper Alireza Haghigi. Iran would fight back, utilizing a corner kick in the 103rd minute when Morteza Pouragilanji would head the ball in. The second half of extra time would start with Iraq's Yaser Kasim being brought to ground inside the keeper's box at the 116th minute mark. Dhurgam Ismail would step up and shoot right beating Haghigi's dive to the left. Iraq would take their second lead at 3:2 with time expiring and a man advantage. But Iran would not lie down and die. A corner kick would again be their savior as the first shot would be saved off the line leading to a second attempt that would hit the crossbar and bounce back out to Reza Ghoochannejhad who make it 3:3. Time would run out, and the dreaded penalty shootout would await.

Iran would shoot first as Ehsan Hajsafi would step up to shoot. The pressure would get to him, as his attempt would go sailing over the crossbar. This would lead to Saad Abdulameer would take his crack for Iraq. Saad would aim low to the left, but would kick it well wide of goal. 0:0 after the first round.

Morteza Pouragilanji would step up next for Iran. He would strike up to the left, and beat a keeper, Jalal, diving in the opposite direction. Waleed Salim would try to tie the shootout for Iraq. He would shoot to the keeper's right, the keeper would dive left, and after two rounds it was tied 1:1.

Iran's captain Javad Nekounam would be a diving keeper by shooting over him for the goal. Iraq would counter with Dhurgam Ismail who would score for the second time in this game from the penalty spot, shooting the same as he did in extra time and scoring. 2:2 after 3 rounds.

Iran's Seyed Jalal Hosseini would score with a powerful shot giving them the momentary advantage. Iraq's Ali Adnan would sneak a goal in hitting just under the crossbar. After 4 rounds, 3:3.

The 5th and final regular round start with Iran's Vouria Ghafouri placing the ball coolly past Jalal. Alireza Haghigi would step up with an opportunity to win the match for Iran with a save. His opponent would be Younus Mahmood who would chip a cheeky shot to the left of goal that would fall calmly in. 4:4 after 5 rounds, and everything from here on out would be sudden death.

Alireza Jahanbakhsh and Yaser Kasim would trade goals making it 5:5.

Andranik Teymourian and Marwan Hussein would also trade goals making it 6:6.

Vahid Amiri would strike right but see the ball bounce off the post. This left Salam Shakir an opportunity to be Iraq's hero. His strike to the left of goal would beat Haghigi who dove the wrong way. Game over, Iraq 7:6 on penalty kicks.

Iran 3(6):3(7) Iraq

Scriptor: Iran 1:0 Jordan
IoannesNix: Iran 1:0 Jordan
Artifex: Qatar 3:0 Palestine
Quaesitor: Bahrain 1:3 Palestine
Praeceptor: Qatar 2:3 Iraq

Not to be outdone, Quarterfinal 4 pitted defending champions Japan against the United Arab Emirates. Ali Mabkhout would open the scoring in the 7th minute giving UAE an unlikely lead. One fan held a sign that read "Why would you drive a Honda when you can fly Emirates". This is easily, the sign of the whole damn tournament. Gaku Shibasaki would level the game in the 81st minute giving Japan a brief sigh of relief as their tournament was not fully over. Extra time would not separate the two teams, and another penalty shootout was to go down.

Keisuke Honda would blast his shot into the stratosphere. Omar Abdulrahman would chip his shot past the keeper putting the Emirates up 1:0 after one round.

Japan's captain Makoto Hasebe would beat the keeper. Ali Mabkhout would also score making it 2:1 Emirates after 2 rounds.

Gaku Shibasaki would give Japan life as he would score his penalty kick. Khamis Esmaeel would kick the ball over the goal leaving the score 2:2 after 3 rounds.

Yohei Toyoda would convert his spot kick making it 3:2 for Japan. Majed Hassan would strike his shot as well, tying it at 3:3 after 4 rounds.

Masato Morishige would calmly score his take leaving the game in the hands of Habib Al Hardan who would keep this game going with a goal. 4:4 after 5 rounds. On to sudden death.

Shinji Kagawa's strike would hit the left post. The match's end would come down to a battle between Japanese keeper Eiji Kawashima and Ismail Ahmed. A strike to the keepers left would give the Emirates a spot in the semi-finals.

Japan 1(4):1(5) United Arab Emirates

Scriptor: Japan 2:1 Qatar
IoannesNix: Japan 2:1 Qatar
Artifex: Japan 4:1 Iran
Quaesitor: Jordan 2:3 Qatar
Praeceptor: Jordan 2:1 Iran

Retroactively, for giving all the proper information as to the Super Bowl, who won, the score, and additionally the halftime performer, Praeceptor has been given day 12's Bonus Bonanza point.

Day 14's Bonus Bonanza points was tough. Though Quaesitor's answer is good, Artifex's is pretty much the truth. She gets the bonus point.

Praeceptor is the only contestant to make any gains today. She picked Iraq into the semifinals and wins 2 points.

The Many Talents of Tim Cahill

The Quarterfinals began today with a rematch from the last Asian Cup that saw South Korea battle Uzbekistan. Four years ago this clash was for fourth place in the tournament. This year, it was to see who moved on and who stayed to fight another day. Uzbekistan would strike first were it not for Korea's keeper Kim Jin-hyeon making himself big and saving the shot. Not to be outdone, Ignatiy Nesterov would come up big twice in a matter of seconds to keep Korea from scoring. Korea's superiority would show when an attack would lead to a bending shot, but again Nesterov would be up for the save. The second half would get underway, and again, Nesterov would keep the match scoreless. Uzbekistan would blow a chance at winning the game when a cross would lead a header going wide of goal. This game would go into extra time. In the 104th minute Korea would take the lead with a soft header by Son Heung-min that would trickle past Nesterov. Just 15 minutes later Heung-min would strike again leaving little doubt who would win this game.

The second Quarterfinal pitted China against the hosts Australia. The first chance of the game went to China, but the nerves must have been on, because the shot would go wide of goal. The first goal of the game would come in the second half when Tim Cahill would hit a bicycle kick past Chinese keeper Wang Dalei at the 49 minute mark. Cahill would strike again in the 65th minute to give Australia a 2:0 lead. Jiang Zhipeng would almost pull one back for China, but Aussie keeper Mat Ryan would be ready for the shot and its follow up. The action would end there, and China would be packing their bags.

It seems the Bonus Bonanza questions are no longer garnering interest. Unfortunately, no one answered correctly for day 12, so no bonus point has been awarded. IoannesNix gave an acceptable answer for day 13, and has won that bonus point.

Scriptor and IoannesNix pick up 4 points for picking 2 semifinalists. IoannesNix also grabs a bonus point for correctly identifying Quarterfinal 1's final score at 2:0. All other players gain 2 points for picking Australia as a semifinalist.

It's Ok If Your Honda Hits a Post, or When Lions Run Wild in Australia

Group D entered it's final day of play with all the drama. Japan lead the group with 6 points, but Jordan and Iraq had 3. Even Palestine still had a chance to advance to the playoffs, but they would need a big win over Iraq and for Japan to decimate Jordan. Action would pick in the Japan game as 24 minutes in Jordan's Amer Shafi would make a save, but the ball would fall to Keisuke Honda for the goal. In the other match, Palestine would look to strike first, but Iraq would hold them scoreless after a scramble for the ball in front of goal was cleared away. Iraq would come alive in the second half, but struggled with their finishing. It would take a corner kick that would be headed in by Younus Mahmood at the 48th minute for Iraq to take the lead. Palestine would keep fighting, but a save by Iraqi keeper Jalal Hassan would keep them scoreless. An Iraqi penalty kick in the 60th minute would be saved by Palestine's Tawfiq Abduhammad to give his side a chance. Back in Japan's game, Jordan's keeper Shafi would save a great shot off a corner kick to keep his side in the match. Shafi would repeatedly get hands on the ball, but Shinji Kagawa's 82nd minute shot would hit the keepers hands and go in. Down 0:2 and with Iraq leading in the other game, it looked like curtains for Jordan. Keisuke Honda would almost make it 3:0, but he did what you never want your Honda to do, struck a post. Iraq would seal their own fate when they would strike in the 88th minute off of Ahmed Yasin's goal.  Japan take top spot in the group and will face United Arab Emirates in the next round. Iraq have stolen the second spot, and get to meet their neighbors Iran in the Quarterfinals.

Playing for Nothing Like it Was Something, or When the Two Best Teams Forget How To Play

The final day of Group C saw the eliminated teams of Qatar and Bahrain closing out their tournaments. Simultaneously being played elsewhere in Australia was a battle for the top spot of Group C. Iran and United Arab Emirates both came into this match with two wins. The better goal differential meant that United Arab Emirates would win the top spot with a tie. For Iran, they would need a win and nothing else. The action picked up quickest in the consolation match where Mohammed Muntari's header would strike the post missing the chance to put Qatar up early. Not to be outdone, Bahrain would also hit the bar off of Sayed Shubbar's header, and this looked like a match of whatever you can do, I can do better. Some fancy passing and calm head in front of goal resulted in a 35th minute goal by Shubbar who looked to make up for his earlier miss. Hasan Al Haydos would tie the game in the 68th minute when his free kick would slip under the wall and into the goal. For these two Middle Eastern rivals, this game was on like Donkey Kong. Not to be outdone again, Sayed Ahmed Jaafar would score a beautiful, bending, long shot in the 82nd minute that would give The Red a victorious exit. The other match would see Iran and United Arab Emirates find ways to miss the goal. You could see the frustration building in the players. The deadlock would finally be broken in the closing moments of the match when a crossing ball would find Reza Ghoochannejhad head right in front of goal. Reza would deflect it over the keeper, and though there would be cries of offsides, Iran would walk away with the winning goal.

IoannesNix: 4/2
Praeceptor: 3/1
Artifex: 2/0

Scriptor has widened his lead in first. Quaesitor is making a late push, and finds himself in third with more bonus points. World Champion Praeceptor is far in the back of the pack. One final day of group play tomorrow leaves the players with a last chance to pick up a few points before the playoffs burn to an end. There are a total of 5 points that a player can earn on the final day of group play. Two correct picks are hard to do, and picking the correct score twice is even harder, but there is always the Bonus Bonanza.

How to Score a Goal without Scoring a Goal, or Can a Former USSR Country Win the Asian Cup? Uzbekistan!

http://www.afcasiancup.com/di/library/asian_cup_2015_en_ar/2b/a3/uzbekistan-v-saudi-arabia_whj98if3xv1r1oyp1m1i6mnhy.jpg?t=-12467790

Group B produced our first bit of simultaneous last match drama. China were set to face North Korea in a match that would determine group positions. North Korea were playing their last game, while China was preparing for the Playoffs. In the other match, Uzbekistan and Saudi Arabia met for a spot in the second round. The Saudi's would only need a draw to grab the second spot in the group. Recent history has Uzbekistan with only 3 victories in 9 tries against the Saudis. China would open up the days goal scoring when terrible defensive play would allow a bouncing ball to fall to Sun Ke who would strike to put China up 1:0. Uzbekistan wanted to get in on that fast action, and succeeded in going ahead of Saudi Arabi 1:0 when in the 2nd minute Sardor Rashidov would streak down the right hand side and beat the keeper wide. Sun Ke would strike next for China, scoring his second off a crossing ball with his head. China were heading into halftime up 2:0. As the second halves would start, it would North Korea who would pull one back when off a strong attacking move when Jong Il-gwan's shot would strike Chinese forward Gao Lin in the 56th minute. Just four minutes later, the other game would see it's second goal. Uzbeki defender Vitaliy Denisov would pull down Naif Hazazi in the box earning a yellow card and giving away a penalty kick. Though Ignatiy Nesterov would correctly guess the shot would go to his right, he couldn't get low in time to block Mohammed Al Sahlawi's hard kick. Momentum seemed to be swinging Saudi Arabia's way. While North Korea would continue plugging away, their best two chances to tie the game went wide of goal, and struck the crossbar. China would walk off the field knowing that they would play Australia in the Quarterfinals. Back in the other match, Uzbekistan would take the lead in the 71st minute off of substiute Vokhid Shodiev's header. With everything to play for, Saudi Arabia would push forward leaving themselves vulnerable to counterattack, and that's just what Uzbekistan did. In the 79th they would press down the left hand side and find a wide open Sardor Rashidov in the center of the field who easily beat Waleed Abdullah for his second goal. As the final whistle blew, the 3:1 victory would mean that Uzbekistan would advance to face South Korea. Four years ago these two teams would meet in the fourth place playoff. The Koreans won by the final of 3:2. This year's matchup is a rematch that could go down as the best match of this tournament.

China PR 2:1 DPR Korea           Uzbekistan 3:1 Saudi Arabia

IoannesNix: China PR 0:1 DPR Korea        Uzbekistan 0:0 Saudi Arabia
Scriptor: China PR 2:1 DPR Korea**       Uzbekistan 2:1 Saudi Arabia

Group B finished play with China in the top spot. Our final standings for the group were:

Scriptor/Quaesitor: 5/1
Artifex: 3/0
Praeceptor: 2/1
IoannesNix: 2/0

As a result of their tie, Scriptor and Quaesitor have each earned the Group B bonus point. Therefore, no one gains this Bonus Point.

Scriptor has jumped into first place with two correct picks, one bonus point for correct score, and a share of Group B's bonus point. The battle for second has tightened as three players are now within 2 points of each other. Meanwhile, reigning world champion Praeceptor sits far in the back with only 6 points. It's a disappointing showing, but maybe she can pull off the big upset.
