Welcome Players!

You've made it this far, now let the fun begin. There are some rules.

1)This is a Secret Society, no one may use their real name. With your invitation you were given a player name. When you interact with the Society you must use this name. Want to know who else is playing? Too bad. You won't find that out until the end.

2)Please indicate in the comments section if you are in fact in or out. Use your player name to identify yourself.

3)$5 is required to enter. You can play without the entry, but your results won't count for Alpaca shit. Want to win the whole thing, then you better have $5.

4)But SSofTSA, how do we get our entry to you without meeting you in person? Easy. Our go between will be GIR. For those of you who don't know, he looks like this:

You will be seeing him. I guarantee it. Along with collecting dues, he will be handing out and collecting packets should you want/require them.

5) If you'd like to try to save the Earth by not wasting paper, then you can download the pick spreadsheet here: Hail Alpaca! The spreadsheet contains 9 sheets. Sheets 1-8 contain one group each. Starting with sheet 1, Group A, you will have to fill in the results of each game as you predict them.
The score you pick for a team in column C should be written beside it in column B. Scores you pick for the team in column E should be written beside it in column F. Continue this for all games in the group. Once complete, make sure to write the number of wins for each team in column B of that teams row. Draws should be written in column C of that team's row (yes, games can end in a draw in Round 1). Losses go in column D. You should see that as you enter the wins, draws, and losses the Points column for each team will add up. This is important, but we'll get to that later. Also, the goals for and against for each team should add up automatically for each team, as well as their goal differential. If this is not occurring for you, do not fret, ask for help and we can help you.

Once you have filled out your picks and filled in the records for the group, take a look at each team's points. The team with the most points is your 1 team for that group. As an example, the team finishing with the most points in Group A is your 1A team for the second stage. Your second place team will be 2A for the second stage. Should two teams finish with the same number of points there is a tie breaking procedure. First, who has the better goal differential. If still tied, who has more goals scored for their side. If it still comes to a tie for you, please contact the Society. We will help resolve the issue. If this doesn't make sense to you, ask. We are here to help.

Once you have filled out every group to completion, place your two advancing teams into the next stage on Sheet 9. This is a straight knockout format. Games here can end in a draw but are then decided by a penalty kick shootout. If you decide two teams will draw, then please include the penalty score for each team in brackets. If this is unclear, please ask for clarification.

Also, you will see that there is a 3rd place playoff. What is this you ask? The two teams that lose in the Semi-finals (Column D) play each other for Third Place. Don't forget to make a pick for this game as well. It counts.

6)As a player, you don't have to know what is going on in the soccer world to play. There are links on the side for each team in the World Cup. This link provides a picture of each team's crest, and a brief profile. It includes team slogans and team nicknames. Pick your favorite from these if you really don't know. Rankings are there as well. Need more clarification on something, just ask.

There are also previews of each group. You don't have to read the break downs under the charts if you don't want. The charts may be helpful. They include both sets of rankings, as well as best finishes in a World Cup, and what position the team finished in if they were in the last World Cup of 2010.

7)In the first round, scoring for players works like this. For every correct result, that being picking a correct win or draw, will score you a point. Guess the correct score, and you get a bonus point for that game. The maximum number of points you can score is 12 points per group, or 96 points overall. If you don't understand, ask for clarification, or just leave it to us. We got this.

8)If you do bad in the first round, don't fret. Your $5 isn't necessarily gone. All players enter the Round of 16 on square pegging. We're all in a giant knockout group. Assuming there are 6 of us playing, all 6 are playing for 4 spots. In this round we fight for points just like round 1. A point is awarded for every team you correctly pick to advance to the next round. Bonus points still apply. But what about your points from Round 1? Tie breakers among players will be settled by how many points you scored in the first round. Finish in first, and you have to be in the bottom of the group to be eliminated.

The two teams finishing last in the 2nd Round will face off against each other for the rest of the knockout stage to see who finishes 5th and 6th. The remaining four players enter the Quarterfinals and continue to fight in a group knockout. First round scores break ties again. The two winners advance to the final round which will encompass the Semi-Finals, 3rd Place Playoff, and Final. The two losers will fight for 3rd and 4th place for the rest of the tournament.

Confusing? Ask for clarification, or just leave it to us. Fair Play is in effect here. 2nd and 3rd place will get some kind of award as well, just no money.

In Conclusion, Honor is at stake here. But more than that, have fun with this. It's just a game.

Group H Preview

Group H FIFA ELO Best Finish WC 2010
Belgium 12 18 4th DNQ
Algeria 25 56 1st Round (3 times) 28th
Russia 18 15 4th DNQ
Korea 55 36 4th 15th

For Algeria, this is their fourth World Cup tournament. They have never made it out of the first round. Just four years ago they finished 4th in their group, but they did successfully hold England to a scoreless draw. This year, FIFA has Algeria ranked higher than South Korea, but the ELO has the two teams swapped, and my gut says the latter has it right. Holding Belgium or Russia to a scoreless draw would be big, but their celebrations will continue around just scoring goals, not results. Their opposition has much better history, with each team finishing as high as fourth in a previous tournament.

Korea took home 4th when they cohosted in 2002. They've been looking for that kind of success since. Last World Cup they made it into the second round despite being in a difficult group on paper. Their 2-0 win over Greece would send them to the knockout round. Here, they fought hard against a talented Uruguay team but lost 1-2. They'll be looking to pick up where they left off with good showings against Algeria, Russia, and Belgium, but finishing in third in this group wouldn't surprise me.

Russia finished 4th back in 1966 as the USSR. Since the fall of the Soviet Union, they've not found that kind of success. They failed to qualify for World Cup 2010 and are unreliable when it comes to figuring out how well they'll play. This team could be going to the knockout round, or they could find themselves leaving after three games. One thing for certain, they'll have a tough time not getting involved in opinions about the politics of their government. At least they won't be running into Ukraine on the field.

Belgium are the young guns who look to find success after overhauling their youth system years ago. They finished 4th in 1986, but haven't made any waves since. Their motto says to "(e)xpect the impossible". This is true. With a veteran captain like Vincent Kompany and a burgeoning star in young Eden Hazard I expect this team to win the group. It won't be easy, but this team should find success against the group. They failed to make it to South Africa, but they should make this a statement tournament. They have the ability here to make themselves early Euro favorites with a deep run. The only thing standing in their way, is themselves.

Key Match:

The second group match of Belgium and Russia will be key. Belgium should take the three points from Algeria without effort. Russia may struggle against Korea. Even with a loss under their belt, a victory for Belgium against Russia would give them 6 points out of two games. This should lock them through to the second round, and set them up for a perfect first round.

Group G Preview

Group G FIFA ELO Best Finish WC 2010
Germany 2 3 1st(3 times) 3rd
Portugal 3 8 3rd 11th
Ghana 38 37 3rd Round 7th
USA 14 13 3rd 12th

Germany have been going deep in international tournaments since 1982. They have one World Cup trophy, 3 Second place finishes, and have finished 3rd in the previous two tournaments. They were European Cup runner-ups in 2008, and finished 3rd in 2012. It came as no surprise last tournament when they won their group. A 0-1 loss to Serbia served as a blip as the Germans scored 8 goals in rounds two and three combined. Eventual champs Spain held them to a 0-1 loss before the offense reinvigorated for a 3-2 3rd place finish over Uruguay. Without question this year's group is a lot tougher than 2010's. Called the Group of Death, Germany will battle Portugal, Ghana again, and the United States. Tough games should lead to close results, but this team keeps showing they are very good. Advancing to the second round is a must, and I can't see the Germans finishing worse than two of these teams.

Portugal are ranked 3rd, but I feel that has more to do with their star and captain Cristiano Ronaldo than anything else. Their best finish at a World Cup was 3rd place in 1966. They've been starving for that kind of success since. 2010 saw Portugal finish second behind Brazil in a three way race for two spots. Two draws meant that a 7-0 drubbing of North Korea would be the difference in advancing Portugal to the knockout round. They lost to Iberian rivals and eventual Champs Spain by the final of 0-1in the round of 16. Looking to make better than that, Portugal may not be able to beat Germany, but success against the US should be certain as they've never struggled against them. Ghana may be the only threat to them if the Africans pick up where they left off four years ago.

Ghana's run to the Quarterfinals last Cup ended with a bit of controversial talk. The Black Stars were certain to go ahead 2-1 when Luis Suarez reached up and knocked a ball down that was goalbound. Even a man up, Ghana lost momentum and couldn't score a goal in extra time. They lost on penalty kicks and would watch as Uruguay would go on to finish fourth, wondering what if. They're one blemish in the group stage was a 0-1 loss to eventual 3rd place Germany. Having lost to both teams that played in the 3rd place playoff shows how good Ghana were. They get to test their metal this time around. Another match against Germany, a tough outing with Portugal, and a rematch with the US will require the best that Ghana has.

The US were riding high four years ago. They won their group against Algeria and Slovenia, but even finished ahead of England. They opened up holding England to a 1-1 draw before seeing themselves take first by outscoring England overall. In that 2nd round they met Ghana. In a hard fought battle, the Americans found themselves eliminated after extra time 1-2. In 2006, a last gasp win by the US against Ghana could have seen them make the second round. That last game ended 1-2 to Ghana. The Stars and Stripes are hoping this won't be the third cup in a row that the Black stars see them out.

Key Match:

It has to be the Ghana vs USA game. They open up against each other, and three points will be huge. Germany may be held to a point by Portugal, so getting an early lead in this group may be enough to get you into the second round. A loss for either team, and you're looking at an early exit. A draw, and it'll be excruciating to watch as both teams look to make up lost ground.

Group F Preview

Group F FIFA ELO Best Finish WC 2010
Argentina 6 4 1st (twice) 5th
Bosnia Herz 25 24
DNQ
Iran 37 29 1st Round (3 times) DNQ
Nigeria 45 30 2nd Round (twice) 27th

Argentina are two time Champions of the World. They're last hey day was under legend Diego Maradona. This edition has their own legend, Lionel Messi, but the current captain seems to fade with the national team. Poor performances at the end of his club season don't put too much faith behind this team, but club and country are different dogs. With a talented supporting cast and an exciting atmosphere in Brazil, Argentina can be a darkhorse to win. I consider them a top 5 team in the world. Four years ago they dominated their group winning every game against much weaker opposition. A quarterfinal loss to Germany by 0-4 seems to have put Argentina out of many people's minds, but a weak group this year means that Argentina should get another shot at a deep run.

Bosnia and Herzegovina have made it to their first World Cup ever. I don't see them giving Argentina a challenge at all. The only team I see them beating is Iran, but that's not a lock either. Nigeria are ranked lower, but the Super Eagles have been here before. It comes down to how well this team can handle the spotlight of playing on the biggest stage.

Iran are in their fourth World Cup. In a way, they got a decent draw. Argentina will make short work of them, and Nigeria should displace them easily. But maybe, just maybe, they can steal some points from Nigeria and Bosnia and Herzegovina. This group is Argentina and Company.

For Nigeria this World Cup is retribution. Four years ago they found themselves drawn with Argentina. An opening game loss 0-1 to the South Americans was supposed to be a positive showing for Nigeria. Losing to Greece and being held to a draw by South Korea resulted in a fourth place finish. That was disappointing. They open this tournament against Iran and should sink their talons into the opposition. Winning will set them up for a second place finish. A draw, and they could find themselves wishing they were back at the 2nd round.

Key Match:

It'll be the rematch between Nigeria and Argentina. A 0-1 loss will not be enough for Nigeria. They need a win or a draw to make it to the second round for sure. Of course, if they take care of business in games 1 and 2, this game won't be as important.

Group E Preview

Group E FIFA ELO Best Finish WC 2010
Switzerland 8 14 3rd Round (3 times) 19th
Ecuador 28 14 2nd Round DNQ
France 19 12 1st 29th
Honduras 30 44 1st Round (twice) 30th

Switzerland are by far the highest ranking team in this group. I'm not sure how they've earned an 8th place ranking, but so be it. They've made it to the Quarterfinals of the tournament on three occasions, but have never threatened to win it. Four years ago they opened up the Cup by beating Spain 1-0. They followed that up with a 0-1 loss to Chile and a 0-0 draw with Honduras. There's no way you beat the eventual World Champions and fail to do so against weaker teams without having some serious flaws. They open up against a French team that could be underrated, and will have a rematch with Honduras. The game against Ecuador can go the other way as well. Though ranked the highest, there is no guarantee here that the Swiss make it out of the group.

Ecuador missed out on World Cup 2010 and are glad to be back with the tournament so close to home. Though they are ranked low by FIFA's standards, the ELO has Ecuador even with Switzerland and two spots behind France. There isn't too much faith behind Switzerland or France, and a FIFA ranking that compares them to Honduras means that anything can happen in this group, but it shouldn't. Ecuador really find themselves one of three teams fighting for two spots.

France have won a World Cup in 1998 when they hosted it. Winning away from home hasn't been a fact. Four years ago they didn't win a game, losing to hosts South Africa 1-2 on the last day putting them dead last in the group. That team fell apart due to chemistry, and they're looking to start over. This team doesn't fair well against weaker opposition. If World Cup 2010 isn't enough evidence, just look at how they opened defense of their Cup in 2002. They lost 0-1 to Senegal. The talent is there for this team to win the group, but it's still unclear if they can play as a team.

Honduras are in their third World Cup ever. Four years ago they walked away with a solitary point finishing last in their group. I don't see them improving much. Ecuador will be their easiest opponent, but they're still to good for Honduras.

Key Match:

Opening day matchups of Swizerland and France, and Ecuador and Honduras will be big. Getting points on the first day is a must. Switzerland and France will be the bigger game because it'll most likely decide who wins the group. The rematch from 2010 of Switzerland and Honduras is the key match in this group. A slip up by Switzerland like 4 years ago will probably knock them out of the tournament. Will the real Switzerland please take the field?

Group D Preview

Group D FIFA ELO Best Finish WC 2010
Uruguay 8 14 1st (twice) 4th
Costa Rica 34 31 2nd Round DNQ
England 11 6 1st 13th
Italy 9 11 1st (four times) 26th

Group D features 3 former World Cup Champions. Italy leads the way with 4 cups, Uruguay has 2, and England has one. As a result, I'll start this group with Costa Rica. It's three and done for this team.

The Ticos have only made it as far as the second round on the world stage. They didn't qualify for 2010, and have the worst draw of any team. True, Uruguay hasn't won a Cup since 1950, but the South Americans are a strong team that seem to be on the upswing. England hasn't won since 1966, a tournament they hosted, but would be in turmoil if they lost to Costa Rica. Italy won their last cup in 2006, but could win a game against Costa Rica with a backup squad. This should be another chance for the minnows of the group to enjoy the event, and try to score some goals. It's about memories not results here.

Uruguay are currently 8th in the world. Their fourth place finish in 2010 did not come without some controversy. Luis Suarez's handball against Ghana helped to send that game to penalty kicks where the Uruguayans prevailed. Some say justice was served after back to back 2-3 losses saw the team finish fourth. This year's team is ready to pick up where they left off. Italy are ranked one spot behind them and look to have a talented, young team. England sit 11th, and though they always expect more than they're capable of, they have a tough team. Uruguay still has some talent of its own. No one can say Luis Suarez had a bad season. Liverpool failed to win the league, but Suarez seems reborn. Brazil isn't Uruguay, but it's pretty much a homecoming for the lad, and they could ride his goal scoring momentum into the second round.

England have talent, but they don't have success at the World Cup. Four years ago England were picked to win their group. Draws against America and Algeria almost brought their tournament to an early end. A 1-0 victory over Slovenia was enough to get them through to the 2nd Round, but saw them finish second on Goals Scored behind the US. The Round of 16 saw England firmly put in their place. 3rd place finishers Germany won easily 1-4 against England. That poor showing calls for much to improve by the Three Lions. Unfortunately, this doesn't look to be the group for that change to happen.

Italy have more titles than England and Uruguay, as well as having one a Cup recently. Just 8 years ago Italy took home the trophy, but they are notorious slow starters. They started so slowly four years ago that they were held to 1-1 draws by Paraguay and New Zealand. Slovakia took the air out of Italy with a 3-2 victory. Gli Azzuri finished dead last in the group and would like to forget that tournament ever happened. They're hungry for success and opening against Costa Rica should give them a big win for 3 points, and control of the group.

Key Match:

Since Italy should steamroll over Costa Rica, the other opening group game of Uruguay and England will be big. Both teams will need three points to keep pace with Italy. A draw would see both fighting beyond just the 90 minutes they're on the field. A loss for either all but seals an early exit. This game could decide the group just as soon as the tournament begins.

Group C Preview

Group C FIFA ELO Best Finish WC 2010
Colombia 5 6 2nd Round DNQ
Greece 10 17 1st Round 25th
Cote D'Ivoire 21 21 1st Round 17th
Japan 47 25 2nd Round (twice) 9th

Colombia are considered the 5th best team in the world. This seems a little over the top considering they haven't won anything in recent years. They seemed to have peaked around 2000, but didn't even qualify for World Cup 2010. This group is wide open in a way. Only Colombia and Japan have ever made it to the second round, and they haven't made it past that. For this group, trying to feed of the South American atmosphere will be a boost, but you still have to play the games.

Greece are considered a top ten team. That seems a stretch too, but they have European Cup under their belts, albeit that was 10 years ago. Still, they continue to qualify for every major tournament they can, and are no pushovers. Four years ago they opened terribly losing 0-2 to Korea. They bounced back with a 2-1 win over Nigeria, but it wasn't enough as Argentina beat them 0-2 on the last day. One point kept them out of their best finish at a World Cup, so maybe this will be the year they play more than three games.

Cote D'Ivoire were looked at to lead the African nations in 2010. Didier Drogba fought hard with a broken arm back then, but the Elephants didn't have enough to make the second round. A 1-3 loss to Brazil, and a disappointing opening day draw with Portugal brought dreams of success to an end. A 3-0 consolation victory over a terrible North Korean team is their last memory of World Cup play. Now their hoping that they can build up some momentum to take them deep in Brazil. They open up play against Japan, and while the Samurai are not Portugal, an unfocused performance can leave the Ivorians hoping to never have anything to do with Brazil at a World Cup again.

Japan seemed to take off internationally after co-hosting the 2002 World Cup. Four years ago they opened up their tournament with a 1-0 victory over Cameroon. They lost 0-1 to Netherlands, but played well against Denmark winning 3-1. Claiming the second group spot they made it to the Round of 16 where they lost in heartbreak. With both teams failing to score a goal even in extra time, Japan lost 3-5 on penalty kicks to Paraguay. It was only their second trip beyond the group stages. The Quarterfinals slipped through their fingers last time, so their hoping to get through a tough, open group and make some history.

Key Match:

Their all key here. There is no one dominant team looking at the group pre-tournament. Colombia is the South American team, and will have the most fans, but if every team brings their A game, this could be the toughest group to get out of.

Group B Preview

Group B FIFA ELO Best Finish WC 2010
Spain 1 2 1st 1st
Netherlands 15 5 2nd(3 times) 2nd
Chile 13 10 3rd 10th
Australia 59 32 2nd Round 21st

Spain are the reigning World Cup Champions. Neither Chile nor Australia should provide much trouble to the Red Fury. The only threat to Spain here is their 2010 co-finalists Netherlands. In a rematch of the Championship game from four years ago we'll see how these teams have changed. Spain need to win this group after a shaky finish to the 2013 Confederations Cup where Brazil obliterated them. To quench the critics' doubts, and any they might have themselves, an opening game victory will be huge. Either way, this team should coast into the next round giving them a chance to win their 4th major tournament in as many tries.

Netherlands were bettered by just one goal, leaving them the 2nd best team in 2010. A bad taste in Oranje's mouth can be cleansed with a win on the first day of group play. Surely they will be looking for revenge against Spain, but they can't overlook the rest of the competition. They won every game in the group stage in 2010 but the opposition wasn't as strong. Winning a group outright can give you the kind of momentum that takes you to the final. Besides Spain, Chile is the major threat. By FIFA rankings, Chile is the better team, but don't follow that ranking too closely. The bigger problem here is that for Chile this will be as close to a home game as they can get. A good result against Spain, and Netherlands should hold off Chile. Minnows Australia always play tough as well, but in honesty, a focused Netherlands should be going through to round 2.

For Chile, this can be a statement year. Failing to get out of the group stage shouldn't be seen as a disappointment for this team, but playing with nothing to lose can improve performances. Two of the best teams in the world sit ahead of them, but the Australia game should be a huge win to give them something to celebrate. They qualified for the round of 16 in 2010 finishing second only to Spain. They're meeting four years ago was a tough one, trailing 0-2 at the half they came out swinging and scored a goal in the 47'. That would be all for that game, and a 0-3 walking over by Brazil in the Round of 16 sent La Roja home. An experienced team will be looking to get out of the group, but sometimes your luck is only as good as your draw.

Australia's decision to get out of the OFC and join Asia hasn't hurt them. Facing tougher competition, they continue to qualify for the World Cup reaching their third straight. Four years ago they beat Serbia, and held a strong Ghana team to a 1-1 draw, showing that the Socceroos are capable of playing against the world. A 0-4 loss to Germany was enough to send them home, and that happened on day one. Opening this year with Chile, Australia hopes for a better performance, because their games don't get any better after that. If nothing else, they'll gain some great experience from this tournament, but it'll be a shock to see them advance.

Key Match:

Spain and Netherlands will be a big game because it opens the tournament for both. The best result would be a draw for them so that they could keep a point moving forward. Bigger games for me will be Spain and Netherlands against Chile. The only team to threaten the big two for a spot to the play-offs, Chile will try to use the South American atmosphere to their advantage. Of course, the importance of these matches could be quelled quickly should Chile go down to Australia.

Group A Preview

Group A FIFA ELO Best Finish WC 2010
Brazil 4 1 1(5 times) 6
Croatia 20 23 3rd DNQ
Mexico 19 19 3rd Round(2) 14
Cameroon 50 56 3rd Round 31

Brazil are the hosts of the tournament, as well as the only team to play in every World Cup since the competition began in 1930. They are also 5 time World Champions, the most of everyone, and looking to win the second tournament held here, as they did the first. They are the highest ranking team in this group, and it is theirs to do with as they please. Heavy favorites to win the group, look for Brazil to make a statement with some big wins. The group is tougher than the one they faced in 2010, but they edged out that series to win the group and ride to the Quarterfinals where eventual runner-ups Netherlands eliminated them 1-2. This is a young group, but their dismantling of reigning World Cup Champions Spain at last year's Confederations Cup shows that the country will take nothing but First as satisfaction.

Mexico are the second highest ranking team in this group. They have never made it further than the quarterfinals in one of these tournaments. The only real threat they face is in Brazil, but playing for second gets you through to the second round. Inconsistency and a coaching change mid-qualifiers leaves many people doubting Mexico's ability, but advancing out of the group stage is a must for this team. That will be difficult as playing the hosts is never easy. In 2010 Mexico finished second in the group edging out the hosts South Africa on goal differential. They finished behind a strong Uruguay team, but were far better than a shockingly bad French team. A second round meeting with Argentina resulted in a 1-3 drubbing that took the Aztecas home earlier than they would have liked.

Croatia failed to qualify for the 2010 World Cup, but find themselves back at the big stage. They are ranked similarly to Mexico, but have finished in 3rd at the tournament in France in 1998. A resurgent performance from this team will be needed to make the second round. Mexico can come out swinging, and one should never underestimate Cameroon.

Cameroon are back again to the World Cup after a disappointing performance in 2010 where they finished better than only North Korea. Aging captain Samuel Eto'o is trying to take these Lions to back to the quarterfinals and beyond, but the road is difficult. They lost all three games four years ago, and went home early in an easier group than this one. It wouldn't be a shock for them to finish second, but there's a lot of work to be done.

Key Matchup:

That opening game for Brazil against Croatia will be huge, because it will set the stage for the team. Croatia will need a good performance, even losing by only one, to keep their heads up. The Mexico and Cameroon game that same day will be big. Cameroon can steal a point or three and start to build momentum, but the same can be said about Mexico.

For me, the biggest game will be Croatia versus Mexico on the last group day. I feel Brazil will own first place, the other three teams will trade shots on each other, and second will be decided that last day. Brazil should clean up against Cameroon leaving Croatia and Mexico to fight for second.
